New Zealand Customs & GST #

  • GST (15%): Applies to all imported goods. For consignments NZD 1,000 or below, GST is collected at checkout via the overseas supplier (if registered) or at the border.
  • Customs duty: Consignments valued over NZD 1,000 are assessed for both customs duty and GST. Duty rates vary by HS code (many goods at 0–5%).
  • New Zealand Biosecurity: NZ has strict biosecurity controls. Do not send any food, plant material, or soil products without prior Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) approval.
  • Declare accurate values — NZ Customs (NZCS) actively monitors postal imports.

Prohibited & Restricted Items #

  • Japan Post EMS prohibited: standalone lithium batteries, dangerous goods, explosives, tobacco, alcohol, drugs, counterfeit goods
  • NZ biosecurity restrictions: fresh fruit, vegetables, meat (unprocessed), soil, wood packaging without heat-treatment, seeds, live plants — all require MPI clearance
  • NZ import prohibited: firearms, weapons, offensive weapons, drugs, restricted medicines
